Umbrella Company FAQs
What is an umbrella company?
An umbrella company is a specialised service provider dedicated to offering PAYE payroll services to contractors. The company invoices the agency for the contractor's time and expenses, subsequently disbursing the funds to the contractor after deducting tax and fees.
What is an accredited umbrella company?
An accredited umbrella company is independently audited to ensure its processes comply with all relevant regulations and laws, protecting contractors and their pay. The two primary accreditations are Professional Passport and FCSA.
Why use an umbrella company?
In essence, choosing an umbrella company offers a quick setup with minimal paperwork, reduced responsibilities, and expenses compared to having a limited company. The umbrella company manages payment administration, and you gain employment advantages, including statutory payments during periods of inability to work, employee benefits and the option to join a workplace pension for retirement savings.
Do I need to do a Self-Assessment with HMRC?
Ordinarily, this won't be the case. You will be treated as an employee of The Egg Group, and as such your tax and National Insurance contributions will be deducted before you're paid. These are detailed on your payslip.
How are payments handled?
Once you are actively working, we track your hours and rate, obtaining information from you and your recruitment agency. We create and submit an invoice to the agency or end client. Upon receiving payment, it goes through the PAYE system, with tax calculated and reported to HMRC through a Real-Time Information (RTI) report. The remaining funds are then disbursed to you.
Am I an employee of the umbrella company?
The Egg Group will be your employer, handling payment processing through PAYE. This arrangement will maintain your contract performance and relieve you of the obligation to complete a self-assessment or tax return. Additionally, being employed through the umbrella company offers advantages such as sick pay, benefits and more accessible applications for credit such as mortgages.
